A Day on Springfield Avenue: MAFL at the Berkeley Heights Block Party

Martial Arts for Life at Berkeley Heights Street Fair
The Martial Arts for Life tent had many visitors at the Berkeley Heights Block Party held on Springfield Avenue in Berkeley Heights, NJ.

Some days remind you exactly why you do this work. June 7th was one of those days.

It started before the block party even began. That morning, 104 members of our MAFL community — students, parents, siblings, and friends — laced up their sneakers and took to the course for the NJ Sharing Network Celebration of Life 5K. Together, we raised $4,728 for a cause that hits close to home for many families in our community. We are proud to have been recognized as one of the top 20 fundraising teams in the entire event.

Then we headed to Springfield Avenue.

Bringing Martial Arts for Life to Berkeley Heights

The Berkeley Heights Downtown Summer Block Party is exactly the kind of event we love being part of — thousands of local families, free activities for kids, local businesses and nonprofits side by side on the street. It's community in the best sense of the word.

Our booth was up and running from noon, with our team on hand throughout the afternoon. Families stopped by, kids tried the clapper kick, and we had dozens of great conversations with parents from the surrounding area. We are grateful to Chris Wang and the Berkeley Heights Business & Civic organization for welcoming us and for creating an event that truly celebrates this community.

The Demonstration

At 2:10 pm, we took the street.

What followed was something we're genuinely proud of (Berkeley Heights Street Fair Demonstration). Our students and instructors brought a range of disciplines to Springfield Avenue that afternoon — Filipino Martial Arts double stick sinawali, a boxing combination flow, double nunchaku forms, and high-intensity kickboxing pad work from one of our 18-year-old black belt instructors.

The moment that drew the biggest reaction from the crowd? A father-and-son boxing combination on the mitts — smooth, sharp, and polished from years of training together. It was a good moment.

We closed the demonstration the way we close most of our outdoor performances: six boards stacked on cinder blocks, set alight, and broken with a single open-hand chop. The crowd was generous with their reaction.

We want to thank every student and instructor who showed up and delivered. You represented Martial Arts for Life exactly the way we hoped you would.

The Response

The response from the community has been humbling. TAPinto Berkeley Heights covered the event and included footage from our demonstration in their highlight video. The Kimberly Anne Wilson Foundation, a longtime charitable partner of our school, shared their own kind words about our relationship and what it means to them.

What This Day Meant

We have been part of this community for over 20 years. Events like the Berkeley Heights Block Party are a reminder of why we do this, not just to teach martial arts, but to show up, give back, and be a genuine part of the village that helps raise the next generation.

If you were at the block party and stopped by our booth or watched the demonstration, we'd love to have you come visit us at 1260 Springfield Avenue in New Providence. We offer a free trial week — no obligation, just come see what we're about.

We'll see you out in the community.
