Rain Didn't Stop Us: Martial Arts for Life at the Berkeley Heights 5K for Mental Health

Some causes are worth showing up for regardless of the weather.
On a rainy September morning in Berkeley Heights, the Kimberly Anne Wilson Foundation held their annual 5K for Mental Health — and Martial Arts for Life was proud to be there as a Gold Sponsor.
A Cause Close to Our Community
The Kimberly Anne Wilson Foundation does important work in raising awareness for mental health — work that matters deeply to the families we serve. Mental health is not a topic on the periphery of what we do at MAFL. The confidence, focus, resilience, and emotional regulation we help kids develop on the mat are connected directly to their mental wellbeing. Supporting events like this one is a natural extension of who we are.
Our relationship with the KAW Foundation has grown over the years, and we are proud to continue supporting their mission in whatever way we can.

On the Ground in Berkeley Heights
Despite the rain, the turnout was strong, a testament to how much this cause means to the people who show up for it every year.
Our team had six people on site managing the MAFL table throughout the morning, engaging with runners, families, and community members as they came through. We also had a small contingent on the course itself, our owner/ chief instructor, his son, and a couple of our students ran the race alongside the rest of the field.
At the finish line, our team handed out MAFL towels to finishers coming across — a small gesture that seemed to land well on a wet morning. We also took a few minutes to perform for the crowd throughout the day, bringing a little of what we do on the mat out into the community.

Why We Keep Showing Up
Events like the Berkeley Heights 5K for Mental Health are not about visibility for us. They are about being part of something larger than our school.
For over 20 years, we have believed that a martial arts school's responsibility to its community does not end at the door of the dojo. The families we serve live in this town, send their kids to these schools, and walk these streets. Showing up — whether it is sunny or raining — is part of being a genuine neighbor.
We are grateful to the Kimberly Anne Wilson Foundation for continuing to put on an event that brings this community together around a cause that matters. We will be back next year.
