Taking the Mat on the Road: Martial Arts for Life Visits Primrose School of Berkeley Heights

One of the things we believe most deeply at Martial Arts for Life is that martial arts belongs in the community, not just inside our school on Springfield Avenue, but wherever kids are gathered and ready to learn.
This summer, we brought that belief to the Primrose School of Berkeley Heights.

A Class to Remember
Our instructors visited Primrose's Summer Adventure Club for a special martial arts session with 30 of their campers. What followed was exactly the kind of class we love teaching: high energy, age-appropriate, and built around the values that make martial arts genuinely valuable for young people.
Over the course of the session, campers worked on foundational martial arts skills while exploring concepts like respect, self-control, focus, and perseverance, not as abstract ideas, but as things they could actually practice and apply in the moment. Games, interactive drills, and demonstrations kept the energy up and the learning real.
And at the end of class? Every camper had the opportunity to demonstrate what they'd learned, received a certificate of achievement, and earned their very own white belt.
The Primrose School captured it well when they wrote that the smiles on the campers' faces said it all.
Why We Do This
Outreach visits like this one are a natural extension of what Martial Arts for Life has always been about. For over 20 years, we have believed that the skills we teach on the mat — focus, confidence, respect, determination — are skills every child benefits from, regardless of whether they ever pursue martial arts formally.
When we bring a class to a school or summer program, we are not there to recruit. We are there because a room full of kids learning to stand up straight, make eye contact, follow instructions, and cheer for each other is a good thing — full stop.

Thank You to Primrose Berkeley Heights
We are grateful to the team at Primrose School of Berkeley Heights for welcoming us back and for the warm reception they gave our instructors. Their Summer Adventure Club is clearly a program that prioritizes the whole child — and that aligns closely with everything we try to do at MAFL.
We look forward to continuing to build on the relationship we have established over the past two summers.
